Get the Look: Keyshia Cole's Shoes at the 2009 BET Awards

By BlaqVixenBeauty · July 1, 2009 · 4 Comments · 145 Views

I can honestly say that I love some of the people that I follow on Twitter. After noticing that the shoes that Keyshia Cole was wearing at the BET Awards have become a hot topic (Sitemeter is so helpful), I knew I had to ask my fellow fashionable followers about the deets. Luckily for me, Chicago Style and Jai Marie knew not only the brand, but the particular style as well. Miss Cole wore the Christian Louboutin Lillian Triple Buckle Pumps which are on sale for $431.48 at Saks Fifth Avenue! Let's admire them for a minute, shall we?

Honestly, how many of us are truly highrolling nowadays? I'm definitely not, that's for sure! I'm waiting for someone to make a decent dupe from a store that I can trust!

What Should I Blog About Next?

Ever since the death of Michael Jackson and the less-than-stellar BET Awards 2009, I have been battling with the dreaded Blogger's Block. It's not that I don't have topics to write about - trust, I have plenty - I just don't know what my next post should be about next! Won't you help me?

My Mr. Spectacular: Michael Jackson, 1958-2009

By BlaqVixenBeauty · June 26, 2009 · 0 Comments · 32 Views

Yesterday was like the 9/11 of music: Where were you when you found out that Michael Jackson died? Sounded almost like blasphemy to suggest the physical ingenuity of Michael Jackson left us yesterday indefinitely. It sure feels that way to me.

I was on Twitter, when at around 5 (CST), I started reading all of these tweets saying that Michael Jackson had suffered from cardiac arrest, that he was in a coma, that he was braindead, that he was dead and gone.

At 5:15 PM, I chastised my friends and followers, screaming, "Hold on y'all! Stop saying RIP Michael Jackson! He's not dead yet!"

At 5:22 PM, I typed, in shock, "Oh damn...he's dead."

At 6:30 PM, after discovering a complete list of all of his songs, I managed to put together these mini-tributes to him: "Dear MJ: U R 'Unbreakable,' 'Invincible,' a 'Heartbreaker' but in the best way. I thought 'Heaven Can Wait' but 'Will You Be There?'" and "Dear MJ: I wanted 2 B your 'PYT'...'The Way You Make Me Feel'...'I Want(ed) 2 Rock With U'...'I Can't Help It'...'I Just Can't Stop Loving You'...RIP MJ." (7:05 PM)

In the words of Afrobella (who wrote an impossibly moving account of how iconic Michael was to her), "Oh, Michael."

VIX FIX: Lancôme Sings the Blues and Channels Josephine Baker

By BlaqVixenBeauty · June 23, 2009 · 2 Comments · 27 Views

This time, when the lady sings the blues, she's talking about a major, fall beauty trend. The 2009 fall collection, Declaring Indigo, was officially unveiled by Lancome's makeup team. This collection, which celebrates the vibrancy of Paris, was created by Lancome artistic mastermind Aaron De May. Inspired by the glamorous, Parisian energetic passion, he chose indigo blue, bright red and luxurious gold. Hmmm, just reading that makes me think the "Bronze Venus" Josephine Baker!

Anne Frank Wax Figure at Madame Tussauds

Gauze your memory for a minute. Do you remember when Lancome debuted all three of the Le Vernis nail colors? The shades (Golden Audacity, Indigo Paris and Rouge Liberty) complemented the makeup and garments beautifully at Chris Benz.

Declaring Indigo will be available for sale starting in August but if the spirit of La Baker has you crafting your own banana skirt, then make your way to your nearest Nordstrom. They have a limited-edition Declaring Indigo brush-and-makeup bag set ($52) available for pre-order, which started shipping on July 17.

Maybe you've drooled over this set in the latest issue of W Magazine?

Get the Look: Terri J. Vaughn at the BET 2009 Awards

By BlaqVixenBeauty · July 2, 2009 · 0 Comments · 10 Views

2009 BET Awards - Arrivals Wow! I haven't seen Terri J. Vaughn in a minute, not counting reruns of Soul Food and Three Can Play that Game. A 3-time NAACP award winning actress and BET.com red carpet host, Vaughn was styled by celebrity hairstylist Johnny Wright. Besides setting it off in black, Vaughn sported a funky, but chic and sassy, side swept look. Wright used products from the SoftSheen Carson Roots of Nature line:

Of course, healthy hair is key to the start of a great hairstyle. The day before the BET Awards, Wright treated Vaughn's hair with Roots of Nature Reconstructing Deep Treatment. "Terri has been working out a lot so I wanted to reinforce the shine of her hair with a deep conditioner. The shea butter and green tea in the Roots of Nature Reconstructing Deep Treatment provide the moisture and shine she was looking for," Wright advised.

Did you know that in order for the hair look its healthiest, you should style the hair after shampooing? You should always plan to shampoo your hair the day prior when preparing for a special occasion.

If your hair is exceptionally dry, apply a small amount of Roots of Nature Strengthening Oil Moisturizer prior to styling. This will help seal the cuticle which will in turn provide a smooth, sleek look.

Flat ironing Vaughn's hair from top to bottom, Wright parted her hair in quarter inch sections. This goal was to keep the look funky yet chic while complementing her asymmetrical cut. The key to achieving Terri's look? "Have fun with it. When flat-ironing, use the iron in random sections. This adds variety to the texture," commented Wright.

Have you tried any of the Softsheen Carson Roots of Nature collection? Your thoughts?

Get the Look: Lil' Mama at the 2009 BET Awards

By BlaqVixenBeauty · July 1, 2009 · 0 Comments · 36 Views

Well, Lil' Mama has done it again - went against the grain and sported a funky, "not for the faint of heart" look. Unlike the edgy updo she constructed for Jada Pinkett Smith, the look that celebrity hairstylist Marcia Hamilton fashioned for Lil' Mama at the BET 2009 Awards could be described as "chaotic." Or, if your style is as funky as Hamilton, maybe you would say "different, fun, fresh, or unique." Your thoughts?

Just in case you want to experiment with a new style, here is a step-by-step blow of how Hamilton created this look:

Start by parting a heavy fringe. This fringe should span from eyebrow to eyebrow. A mini-flat iron was used from roots to ends. This helped to ensure that Lil' Mama's fringe was smooth and sleek. Hamilton sprayed David Babaii for WildAid Extra Hold Styling Spray to keep the style long lasting and movable. As a finishing touch, mist the ponytail with a light shine spray to finish the look.

Sweep your remaining hair up and then to the side. It should rest above the left eyebrow.

Use a sturdy elastic, like a Goody Elastic Band, to hold the hair. Sweep into a side ponytail. To smooth down flyaways, spray hair with David Babaii for WildAid Light Styling Spray.

If you desire extra volume, wrap a curly/wavy human hair weft aroung the ponytail. Secure the weft with a bobby pin. To get smooth curls and waves in the ponytail, a H2pro HC34 3/4² Ceramic Curling Iron was used. For perfect, polished curls, take 1" sections and mist with a heat protection spray like White Sands Liquid Texture Medium Hold. Wrap the sections around the iron.

Fashionable Footwear for the Fourth of July: SwitchFlops

By BlaqVixenBeauty · June 30, 2009 · 0 Comments · 24 Views

Recently, I've had the pleasure of wearing a pair of SwitchFlops - a trendy twist on the ubiquitous flip-flop. Imagine being able to change your look (not your sole, as their slogan goes) by switching out the strap of your flip-flops within seconds? Actually for me, it took a few minutes because I was trying to apply the Nicola strap (which is a silver and white jacquard strap with a brilliant clear rhinestone button) as perfectly as possible on my pair of white scroll taylor wedges. I noticed that the strap didn't exactly match up with the velcro on the wedges. In my irritation, I just sticked them on, ignoring the fact that the strap didn't completely covered the velcro. When I stood back to "admire" my work, I was surprised that they didn't look too bad.

Created by Lindsay Phillips in 2007, the SwitchFlops collection consists of ten shoes (two kitten heels and eight flip flop wedges) and various straps to choose from, which are categorized by collection - Americana, Summer Shine, Color Burst, Bridal, Native, Team Stripes, State Fair and Think Pink. My Nicole strap is from the Bridal Collection.

At first, I had my eye on the black and cork Lily kitten heels ($49). I haven't worn kitten heels in a while so I was tempted to rectify that. Finally, I decided that it would be in my best interest to get a snazzy flip-flop instead. Scrolling down the list of options, I finally settled on the white scroll Taylor wedge ($39), also from the wedding collection. It came with Jordi ($12), a silver metallic and white zip strap with a silver metallic button. I chose this one because I'm short (5'2") and needed a bit of a lift. :) One of my fantasies was to get married on a beach at sunset so one day, hopefully, these would really come in handy. Preferably while I'm walking to my beloved!

I've been playing around with the online editor (which is handy by the way because you can come up with different combination to see if they're worth buying). Inspired, I've come up with some Fourth of July SwitchFlops designs that you can view in the gallery. Please let me know your thoughts! Would you buy these?

Get the Look: Keyshia Cole at the BET Awards

By BlaqVixenBeauty · June 29, 2009 · 1 Comment · 113 Views
2009 BET Awards - Show

Again, I'm obsessed with Keyshia Cole....well, sort of! Instead of focusing on her makeup, I am talking about her coif, which is an ode to Janet's "Three's Company" mullet and Farrah's iconic "Charlie's Angels" flip. It was both feminine and edgy, thanks to Motions Celebrity hairstylist Ursula Stephen. "I was definitely inspired by women of the 70's," Stephen reveals.

In just three steps, with help from your mane maestro of course, you can also rock hair "sent from Heaven":

Request eye-catching layers - from top to bottom. Stephen "didn't want to take off too much length" but managed to keep the layering dramatic by leaving some sections longer in the back to boost the wow factor. Stephen aimed to give the cut "an interesting edginess to it."

While the hair is still damp, mist Motions Heat Seeker Protecting Spray Protecting Spray on each section of hair.

For the finishing touch, treat each section to a coating of Motions Light Hold Spritz. To get a smooth, sleek style, promptly flat iron each section.

VIX FIX: My First Fashion Fair Foundation

By BlaqVixenBeauty · June 23, 2009 · 4 Comments · 27 Views

Do you remember your first Fashion Fair product? Mine was the Oil-Free Perfect Finish Creme to Powder Makeup compact in Tender. This was back in November of 2006. I had just completed Navy boot camp and had transferred to Basic "A" Hospital Corps School, which was in the same city (Great Lakes, Illinois) but across the street.

After gushing to my mom about the massive selection of Dooney & Burke and Coach bags, as well as shoes the local Navy Nex had, we decided to visit. You know that phrase, "Spending like sailors on leave?" Yep, that was me. I was buying all types of clothes, shoes, movies, etc. I wasn't as crazy about makeup though; the most I had ever experimented was with nail polish and lip gloss.

Still, to this day, I don't why I made my way to the Fashion Fair counter. I wasn't familiar with the other makeup counters - Lancome, Clinique, Elizabeth Arden, or Estee Lauder - so naturally I would gravitate towards the only Black makeup counter in the store, right? I read Ebony as well as Jet. I guess I was wondering if the brand was really as old-fashioned as the ads suggested.

If I remember correctly, the Fashion Fair rep wasn't there - in fact, it was someone else that matched me. I can't remember which counter she was from, but her makeup was flawless and she dressed like the girls I envied back in high school. She did a great a job blending - I didn't look too made up and it didn't look like I had a mask on my face! Since I had no idea about setting powder at the time, my face was hella greasy-looking. I pretended that it just made my skin glow, just like that time I rubbed a Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Swivel Stick all over my face. Glowing skin, my behind!

I tried it last year - the first time in two years - at the the Fort Sam Houston PX. That was the first time that I was matched for a Fashion Fair foundation in the Summer time. It looked okay - I can't remember which shade it was - but it wasn't until I stepped outside that I noticed that my face was darker than my face. This was before it oxidized. It was like prom night all over again! Since then, I've thrown away my lone Fashion Fair foundation and haven't replaced it. Since I've found Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse foundation, I don't think I will!

Do you remember your first Fashion Fair foundation? Your thoughts? By the way, have you seen the ad for the new brush set:

I love how the brushes look! I'd "brush on beauty" with them!
